  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Barbara -- Enough with the recipes : Too much space wasted on recipes. I guess some people like them included, but I just skip over them. The conversations sound like the people live in 1950, not the 2000s! And they go on and on....about nothing but space fillers. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from LancelotsLover -- Disappointing : Not at all up to the usual Hannah standard, which, let’s face it, isn’t all that high. I read this series as brain candy, and normally enjoy the story and recipes. The language in this book is even more stilted than normal, and the plot is short, disjointed, and unbelievable. Much of the narration consists of baking directions inserted into the storyline, and Hannah’s warring rational/irrational thoughts, mostly about her mother. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Michelle Weisenberg -- Really gone downhill : I used to really enjoy the books in this series, however, the last few have really gone downhill. It’s as though someone different is writing them, perhaps a child. The dialogue is very clipped, and the details are very mundane. We spend pages and pages reading about every little ingredient for every little thing they are going to put in their mouth. There are more chapters talking about the ingredients of their food than there are about the plot of the mystery. This could have been a 30 page short story. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Something not right : The story was okay I guess but something is off. Was the book General and broad to appeal as a Christmas story? I felt like it belonged back in the beginning books of the series. Several plot lines were not in the right time frame. Also the blurb about the book mentioned Michelle's love life yet she isn't even in the story and only talked about for as very short minute. Is this a book written years ago? Or did someone else ghost write it? Not my favorite. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from VH in PA -- Should have been a short story : This book was a disappointment. The plot is thin. There have been 20+ books in this series. It makes no sense that this story fits between the storylines that occurred many many books ago. With tighter editing it might have made a good short story. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from cibaly3000 -- Very disappointed 😞! : I love the Hannah Swenson mysteries but this one was not very good. The conversations were stilted, as if the author forced the conversations, and recipes are starting to take over the book! I couldn't get thru the book, to even see if there was a murder. If there wasn't then the title is misleading! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from D -- Very confusing : I’m just a little confused about this book. There’s a statement that this book is before Hannah started investigating. I’m not even 100 pages in, Hannah has a cell phone, if I remember correctly in the first book, she definitely didn’t have a cell phone. Mike was also mentioned, but Mike was new in the Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, again if I remember correctly. Also, I thought Norman moved back to Lake Eden in the first book? Why was it mentioned to call Norman to help move things? ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from P. E. Peterson -- Delightful story from back when ... : First, let me say it was a delightful story but then I started feeling like a detective. If this is your first Hanna Swenson books then please stop reading for I divulge things you learn much later. If you have read every book so far then please continue. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Helen19 -- Joyous! : As always, the recipes are silly ( in that they're aimed at people who need help following the instructions for packaged cake mix) but this was a fun read. Nice not to have a murder, & if the whole thing was improbable to say the least, well, we can all do with some amiable fun in these Coronatimes. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from E G Cooper -- Worse Hannah Swenson book ever : Very disappointed, it was badly written and the plot was totally out of context with the previous ones, wouldn’t recommend it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Judy Kindle ASUS -- Very disappointing : Not only does this book go back in time from the last book in the series but there is no continuity with the previous books. In 'Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder', book 1 of the series, Hannah just meets Norman and Mike, her sister Andrea is a real estate agent and Andrea's daughter is four. THIS book is further down in time where Norman and Mike are 'family', but Andrea is not employed and Tracey, Andrea's daughter is just a baby. This sort of thing really bothers fans of a series. Unfortunately it's also not as well written as the other books. ( Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Robert -- cozy mystery : Christmas Cupcake Murder is a quick read. Overall I did enjoy the book and it does have some fun moments. However it is not a murder mystery. The mystery is not that complex and seems to be more in the background. The characters spend more time talking and eating than really solving the mystery. The other reason that I gave this book a 3 rating as it is set back a few years in the timeline and is a bit confusing as to where in fits with previous books. I do like the characters. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jansoocan -- Just Alright : If the book were a recipe I would guess that the baker left out the salt. To be blunt it was boring. It was almost as if the author thought "I need to write another Christmas themed book. This will do" ( Reviewed in Canada on October 3, 2020 )
